Vermont SNAP Update: How the Shutdown Impacted Families & Why Full Benefits Are Back
I know the uncertainty around the November 2025 SNAP shutdown has been incredibly stressful for so many families across Vermont. The good news is that the shutdown has officially ended, and full benefits are now restored. Here’s a breakdown of what happened and how to get the help you need now.
✅ The Shutdown is Over & Full Benefits Are Back!
The federal government shutdown officially ended on November 12. As a result, the USDA has authorized all states, including Vermont, to issue 100% of November's SNAP (known here as 3SquaresVT) benefits.
Vermont took a proactive step during the shutdown by using state emergency funds to issue two weeks' worth of benefits early. If you received this partial payment, the remaining balance is now being added to your EBT card. You do not need to do anything to receive these funds.
📝 How to Apply for 3SquaresVT (SNAP) in Vermont
If you're not already receiving benefits, applying is simple. The fastest method is online, but you can also get free help over the phone or in person.
🚨 Need Food Help Fast? Expedited (Emergency) SNAP
You may qualify for Expedited SNAP and receive benefits within 7 days if your household meets one of these criteria:
- Your monthly household income is less than $150 and your cash/bank assets are $100 or less.
- Your combined income and assets are less than your monthly rent and utility bills.
- You are a migrant or seasonal farmworker with little to no income or assets.
Your application is automatically screened for expedited eligibility. You only need to verify your identity to receive emergency benefits; other documents can be submitted later.
